What moisture indicators are and their purpose
Moisture indicators are inexpensive and easy-to-use devices that allow you to monitor the moisture level inside packaging from the outside. They are highly precise and reliable, ensuring the maintenance of product quality.
This monitoring helps control the activity of desiccants inside the packaging. Desiccants are the perfect solution to prevent moisture circulation in closed spaces, as they absorb and neutralize it. They can maintain humidity levels below 40%, protecting the goods.
The type of indicators used by Flexpack is applied to barrier laminated sleeves, a triple-layer film that, thanks to welding and vacuum sealing, ensures the absence of moisture inside the packaging. This is ideal, for example, for maritime transport and for fragile goods that need long-term storage.
How to monitor moisture levels in packaging
It is possible to monitor the moisture level inside a sealed space from the outside using moisture indicators. These consist of cards impregnated with solutions of varying cobalt salt concentrations.
They have humidity indication marks, from 10% to 60% and above. The color of these marks changes from pink to blue depending on the humidity detected inside the package.
For example, if the moisture present is 25%, the 10% and 20% marks will be pink, while the 30%, 40%, 50%, and 60% marks will be blue. This indicates that the humidity is above 20% but below 30%.
If the moisture indicator shows a value below 25%-30%, there is no concern, as corrosion or rusting does not occur below these levels.
Besides moisture variations inside packaging, it is always important to prevent temperature changes and possible impacts, tilts, spills, or overturning that could damage the goods.
