Managing Shipments Effectively with the Packing List
Carriers move multiple packages every day, and for this reason, some preparations are necessary before a shipment. Among these is the compilation of the Packing List or the package manifest.
In this article, we will explain what a Packing List is and, above all, its usefulness in the logistics sector.
What a Packing List is Used For
The Packing List (or package manifest) is a non-fiscal document in which the identifying details of the packages are recorded. It is drafted on the exporter’s letterhead and must be attached to invoices for exports to non-EU countries.
Even for domestic shipments, using a package manifest is recommended so that the recipient has all the necessary information about the goods. Additionally, the Packing List is useful for assessing any potential damage.
Packing List Template: Required Information
The Packing List is an essential document for freight forwarders, both for the accurate calculation of shipping and storage costs and for import-export customs operations. It must therefore present information clearly.
Typically, it includes the name, address, date, invoice reference, and a list of items included in the shipment with all their specifications. Other details may include the quantity, dimensions, and weight of each package. Finally, the package manifest should be stamped and signed by the exporter.
The document is placed in Packing List pouches, which can be adhesive, printed, or metal. These allow easy access to the shipping documents while protecting them from dirt, rain, and other environmental factors.
